Are college students supposed to be excited for class? Are we supposed to love all the classes we are taking? I do. Maybe I'm just a nerd for school or maybe it's the fact that I am taking some REALLY interesting classes this semester. I'm taking three interesting classes in particular. Right now, a current topics class in biodiversity is one of my favorites. We are reading E. O. Wilson's The Diversity of Life, which is super interesting to me. It's all about mass extinctions and trends in biodiversity. Then we also read current scientific papers that follow along with the chapter. Marine ecology is also super interesting! I am trying to think of an independent research project to start on. I'm thinking of something that could go along with my obsession for anthropogenic effects, but it is hard to find a simple way to test that. I'll keep an update on my research this semester for that class! The class I am most excited for though is Tropical Marine and Coastal Ecology. We can't study tropical ecology in Alaska though... so we are going to PUERTO RICO! We will be studying at the Marine and Coastal Ecology Research Center in San German, Puerto Rico! The course is designed to study tropical fish and the ecosystems by snorkeling, but since I am SCUBA certified, the facility will be providing gear for those who are qualified! We are going to a ton of different places, including the world famous, BIOLUMINECENT BAY! I can't be more excited for this semester! My choice to move to Juneau and persue Marine Biology is a good choice that has given me an amazing world of opportunity!
